research overview My overall research focus has been the identification of mechanisms and biomarkers of acute lung disease in critically ill neonates, infants, and children. Specifically, I have had two research foci: 1) Developmental lung and lung vascular disease in infants who are born extremely premature; and 2) Lower respiratory tract infections, including ventilator-associated-pneumonia in critically ill children requiring mechanical ventilator support. While seemingly disparate topics, these two foci have capitalized on the breadth of my training as both a pulmonologist and critical care physician and collaboration with multi-disciplinary scientific teams to obtain a consistent level of funded projects (including NIH R and U mechanisms) and produce impactful results. In addition to serving as principal investigator (PI) for funded projects in these focused areas, I serve as the site PI and Steering Committee member for the prestigious NICHD supported Collaborative Pediatric Critical Care Research Network (CPCCRN), which performs meaningful clinical research in the field of pediatric critical illness and injury. I am a key member of the team that designed the Personalized Immunomodulation in Pediatric Sepsis-induced MODS (PRECISE) for the upcoming cycle of CPCCRN, which will be among the first personalized medicine trials in pediatric critical care.
