Biography I am Dr. Eric Rosenbaum, Professor of Pathology and Board-certified pathologist at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS). A native of Long Beach, California, I earned my Bachelor of Science with Highest Honors in Genetics from the University of California, Davis, then went on to complete a post-baccalaureate fellowship at the National Institutes of Health in the field of molecular structure. Following work with the NIH, I began my medical education at Emory University, earning a Doctor of Medicine and Master of Public Health. My work in Arkansas began with residency training in Laboratory Medicine & Pathology, followed by a fellowship in Blood Banking and Transfusion Medicine. I am Board-certified in both these areas of specialty practice.
As clinical faculty, I hold joint appointments at UAMS and the Arkansas Children’s Hospital. Although I am a generalist, I particularly enjoy my leadership roles in Clinical Microbiology and Transfusion Medicine. In my role as medical director of the UAMS Clinical Microbiology Laboratory, I pioneered use of new technologies for rapid identification of microorganisms and antibiotic susceptibility testing. At the Arkansas Children’s Hospital, I am an attending clinical pathologist and medical director of the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory, Molecular Diagnostics and Immunology Laboratory, and Division of Transfusion Medicine (Blood Bank, Cellular Therapy, & Tissue Bank). I have also served the State of Arkansas with tenure as Branch Chief of Clinical Testing at the Arkansas State Health Laboratory between 2011 and 2017. There I oversaw all clinical laboratory services including the molecular, microbiologic, serologic, and newborn screening testing laboratory divisions. I continue to serve Arkansans as a Governor-appointed member of the Board of Directors for the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory.
My clinical, academic, and research interests focus on laboratory quality assurance and accreditation, modernization of the clinical laboratory, and the building of cellular therapy laboratory infrastructure to support bone marrow transplant programs. Medical education is also a significant part of my work. I believe in use of structured hands-on teaching and have developed successful curricula using this approach with medical students, residents, and fellows.
I serve globally as International Commissioner for Africa, College of American Pathologists Laboratory Accreditation Program.
