This application is aimed at examining the role of osteoclast mitochondria as a target of the bone protective effect of estrogens. Work proposed will test whether estrogens reduce osteoclast number and bone resorption by inhibiting RANKL stimulation of mitochondria, decreasing NAD+, and promoting mitochondria apoptotic death in osteoclast precursor cells.
