research overview The goal of our research is to better understand the key role that macrophages play in the development and progression of chronic inflammatory diseases including cardiovascular disease and cancer. Our studies indicate that a specific macrophage receptor, the class A macrophage scavenger receptor (SR-A), may differentially function to enhance or diminish inflammation. Our ongoing studies seek to provide mechanistic details regarding the functional interactions between SR-A and inflammatory signaling pathways. Results of these studies will advance understanding of the pathologic role of macrophages in cardiovascular disease and cancer, and may indicate novel therapeutic approaches targeting the inflammatory responses in these disease.
