overview A native of Searcy, Arkansas, Steve graduated from Hendrix College and then obtained a Ph.D. in Cell Biology at Vanderbilt University. After a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Kentucky, he became the first recipient of the Inglewood Fellowship for Alzheimer's research at UAMS, where he is currently Professor in the Departments of Geriatrics, Neurobiology & Developmental Sciences, and Internal Medicine. Since 1996, he has been jointly appointed at the Department of Veterans Affairs. He is also a member of the Arkansas General Assembly’s Alzheimer’s Disease Advisory Board. Steve has published over 100 articles in the field of neuroscience and neurological disease and has been nearly continuously funded by one or more grants from the National Institutes of Health since 1994. He is Deputy Chief Editor for the Journal of Neurochemistry and is active on the editorial boards of three other scientific journals. Steve has been a member of the Committee for Animals in Research at the Society for Neuroscience and president of that Society’s Arkansas Chapter. He received the Odyssey Medal for Research from Hendrix College in 2010. Steve is also an instructor and a research advisor for graduate students, including serving as course director for a course named “The Basic Biology of Aging.” Steve is an outdoors enthusiast and enjoys competition in a variety of endurance events, including triathlons and adventure racing.
