overview I have 19 years of experience in clinical and research management of neuropsychiatric symptoms of dementia with an emphasis on Apathy, a profound loss of motivation with far reaching consequences. I have conducted seven RCTs of apathy treatment. These studies were funded by the Department of Veterans Affairs, the National Institute of Aging and the Alzheimer’s Association. As the role of dopamine in management of apathy became clear to me, I have been instrumental in developing transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) interventions for the same. My ongoing rTMS study, funded by a MERIT grant from the Department of Veterans Affairs, focuses on treating apathy in pre-dementia to test if such treatment influences the rates of conversion to dementia. Finally, I am a member of the Alzheimer’s Association’s Neuropsychiatric Syndrome Professional Interest Group, and the VA TMS providers group, the former setting the research agenda for apathy management and the latter providing innovative tool to achieve the same. I have served as a member on the Alzheimer’s Association research grants review committee, the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) reviewer, chair the RRD research panel at ORD and as an ad hoc reviewer for several journals focused on behavioral management of dementia.
