Collapse Overview
Collapse description
Sleep apnea is highly associated with many other common disorders including hypertension, diabetes and obesity, all of which are especially prevalent in Arkansas. A common underlying mechanism that links these various disorders is unknown, however, abnormalities in the diversity and richness of gut bacterial populations (microbiome) have been documented in patients with each of these three associated disorders. CPAP treatment also benefits hypertension and diabetes. We hypothesize that abnormalities in the gut microbiome will be found in patients with OSA, will improve with CPAP treatment and will shed light toward a common mechanism linking these various disorders.
