Research (K Gallagher)Jan 1, 2018 - Jul 31, 2019 UAF Chancellor's Grant Determining risk factors and establishing preventative strategies of neck pain development due to smartphone use. Role Description: Of Americans between the ages of 18-29, 92% own a smartphone and spend 5 hours per day using these devices. Many medical professionals believe that this has led to text neck, which is neck pain caused by excessive smartphone use. People typically use their smartphone with the head bent forward, and this has been linked to long-term neck pain. Our study assesses the impact of 30 minutes of smartphone usage on reports of neck pain in people who have never had a neck-related injury. We will measure smartphone use, body position, and muscle strength to determine if it is possible to predict who develops neck pain when using a smartphone. Role: Co-Investigator |
| R43HD085293 (JEFFERSON, JOHN R)Nov 1, 2016 - Oct 31, 2018 NIH/Nat. Inst. of Child Health & Human Development - Pass Through: AMES Technology Training the brain with a robotic device for balance recovery in near-frail older adults- Resubmission Role Description: The research objective of this study is to determine whether an intervention and associated robotic device called “AMES” can be used to enhance balance recovery following an unexpected loss of balance by conditioning areas of the brain involved in lower-limb motor control. We hypothesize that AMES can improve balance recovery, gait, and reduce falls in near-frail older people by improving lower-limb strength, speed, and coordination. Role: Principal Investigator |
