Overview Dr. Dranoff was raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and obtained a B.A. degree from Lehigh University and M.D. from Drexel University College of Medicine. He trained in Internal Medicine at Boston University and the Boston City Hospital prior to training in Digestive Diseases at Yale University Medical School in New Haven, Connecticut. After completing his training at Yale, he remained as a faculty member there from 1999-2011. Dr. Dranoff is an internationally-known physician scientist. His clinical expertise focuses on the 'cholangiopathies', conditions primarily affecting bile duct cells, including primary biliary cirrhosis and primary sclerosing cholangitis. Dr. Dranoff also has a strong interest in cirrhosis and its complications. These clinical interests dovetail with Dr. Dranoff's NIH-supported research, focusing on the basic mechanisms of liver fibrosis and cirrhosis.
