    Collapse overview
Dr. Dranoff was raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and obtained a B.A. degree from Lehigh University and M.D. from Drexel University College of Medicine. He trained in Internal Medicine at Boston University and the Boston City Hospital prior to training in Digestive Diseases at Yale University Medical School in New Haven, Connecticut. After completing his training at Yale, he remained as a faculty member there from 1999-2011. Dr. Dranoff is an internationally-known physician scientist. His clinical expertise focuses on the 'cholangiopathies', conditions primarily affecting bile duct cells, including primary biliary cirrhosis and primary sclerosing cholangitis. Dr. Dranoff also has a strong interest in cirrhosis and its complications. He has newer interests in translational studies in fatty liver disease, serving as a senior mentor in the CCOP COBRE, and in acetaminophen toxicity in patients with cirrhosis.

    1. CCOP. Senior Mentor and direct mentor to Emir Tas. In this work, Dr. Tas and I study the relationship of insulin resistance and fatty liver disease in adolescents. We attempt to alter the natural history via prescribed exercise.
    2. ASIC (acetaminophen safety in cirrhosis). This is a collaborative project with Drs. Laura James and Mitch McGill. The goal of the project is to determine whether acetaminophen is a safe analgesic in patients with cirrhosis.
    3. Radiation-induced liver injury. This is a collaborative project with Dr. Nukhet Aykin-Burns. The goal of the project is to determine mechanisms of injury in patients who have received radiation to the liver and to identify ways to reduce this injury.
